About This Photograph

In 1922, 21-year-old Gene Sarazen secured a one-shot victory over Bob Jones and John Black at Skokie (Ill.) Country Club. The newly-crowned champion is pictured here, holding the trophy, following his final round score of 68, lauded by the press as “one of the greatest finishes in the history of golf.” Before turning 22, Sarazen would go on to win two other major championships, eventually becoming the first golfer to win all four events that comprise the modern Grand Slam.
