About This Photograph

Gene Sarazen was an unheralded 20-year-old professional who had grown up caddieing at Apawamis G.C. in Rye, N.Y., when he showed up at the 1922 U.S. Open at Skokie C.C. in Glencoe, Ill. Sarazen held off amateur Bob Jones and John Black by a stroke for the first of his two U.S. Open championships. Sarazen captured seven major titles in his Hall-of-Fame career and became the first golfer to earn the career Grand Slam (U.S. Open, British Open, Masters and PGA Championship).
