About This Photograph

Photo shows Francis Ouimet’s grip. Ouimet, considered by many to be golf’s first great hero, modified the perception of golf across the globe when he defeated British legends Harry Vardon and Ted Ray during the 1913 U.S. Open at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., Ouimet’s hometown. Ouimet would continue his championship success the following year, earning the U.S. Amateur title by defeating Jerome D. Travers at Ekwanok Country Club in Manchester, Vt. Ouimet would again win the U.S. Amateur championship in 1931, defeating Jack Westland at the Beverly Country Club in Chicago, Ill.
