About This Photograph

Ernie Els, 24, of South Africa became the youngest U.S. Open champion since Jerry Pate in 1976 when he out-dueled Scotland's Colin Montgomerie and Loren Roberts in a Monday playoff at Oakmont (Pa.) Country Club. The trio was tied at 5-under-par 279, but Els shrugged off a slow start to beat Roberts in sudden death after the two remained tied at 74 after 18 holes (Montgomerie was eliminated after shooting 78).
