About This Photograph

For Michelle Wie, 2005 was a pivotal year, even though she didn't win a championship. Before the U.S. Women's Open, she qualified for the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, an event whose field is usually all male. She also finished second at the McDonald's LPGA Championship, the second major on the LPGA Tour schedule. At the Women's Open at Cherry Hills in Colorado, Wie shared the 54-hole lead and seemed poised to become the first amateur since Catherine Lacoste in 1967 to take the title. But the 2003 U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links champion stumbled to a final-round 82 and wound up tied for 23rd with Annika Sorenstam. A year later, Wie would finish tied for third at Newport (R.I.) C.C., two strokes out of a playoff with Sorenstam and Pat Hurst.
