About This Photograph

The fifth of 10 children born into poverty in the shadows of the packing house district of Omaha, Neb., Johnny Goodman quit school to support his younger siblings. He picked up the game through his caddie days at Omaha Field Club and by 1927, won the Trans-Mississippi Amateur. In 1929, he upset defending champion Bob Jones in the first round of the U.S. Amateur at Pebble Beach. Four years later, he carded a second-round 66 to bolster his one-stroke U.S. Open triumph at North Shore G.C. in Glencoe, Ill. In 1937, he captured the U.S. Amateur title by beating Ray Billows in the final match.
