About This Photograph
Just to lighten the tension, Lee Trevino tossed a rubber snake at Jack Nicklaus prior to their 18-hole playoff to decide the 1971 U.S. Open at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa. Trevino was known for being an on-course jokester and he remembered his daughter had left the toy snake in his bag. Getting down to business, Trevino shot a 68 to defeat Nicklaus by three strokes for his second Open triumph in three years. Nicklaus was seeking a third Open title, which he achieved the following year at Pebble Beach. Trevino's previous Open victory came in 1968 at Oak Hill C.C. in Rochester, N.Y.
