About This Photograph

Gene Sarazen, like Francis Ouimet in 1913, emerged from the caddie ranks to win the first of his two U.S. Open titles, holding off amateur Bob Jones and John Black for a one-stroke victory at Skokie C.C. Born to Italian immigrants, Sarazen became the first golfer to attain the career Grand Slam (U.S. Open, British Open, Masters and PGA Championship) Others who have achieved it since are Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan, Gary Player and Tiger Woods.
