About This Photograph

Old Tom Morris of St. Andrews, Scotland is considered one of the pioneers of professional golf. He worked with Allan Robertson, considered to be the first golf professional. A strong player, Morris won the second British Open and later became a course designer, laying out such venues as Carnoustie and Muirfield. The 18th hole on the Old Course at St Andrews is named after Morris in memory of his commitment to the course and the game. Morris was also the father of modern greenskeeping. He introduced the concept of top-dressing greens and many novel ideas on turf and course management, including actively managing hazards. (Before Morris, bunkers and the like were largely left to their own devices, becoming truly "hazardous").
